HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Saint Louis’ preeminent baseball player Caleb Lomavita has been named Gatorade Hawaii Baseball Player of the Year 2021, Gatorade announced on Tuesday.
The award is presented annually to the best baseball player in the state on and off the diamond, with Lomavita being honored as this year’s award winner – the fourth crusader to receive the award.
“I was so excited that I achieved the same successes as so many great ones before me.” Lomavita told Hawaii News Now sports reporter Kyle Chinen. “It’s so amazing, the feeling is incredible.”
After losing a baseball season in 2020, Lomavita and STL bounced back in 2021 by breaking an 8-2 record and winning the ILH championship.
The utility player played catcher, outfield and pitcher for the Crusaders and used the pandemic as a learning experience.
“I don’t see the pandemic as a bad thing, I’ve learned so much from the pandemic.” said Lomavita. “I’ve grown so much since the pandemic, through the pandemic I got to know myself better, got to know other people better and brought them closer to some people I wasn’t close to before the pandemic, so it was a sweet moment, but I see them Pandemic not negative. “
The senior signed his National Letter of Intent to play collegiate baseball for the University of California Berkley, but Lomavita is widely recognized as the best MLB draft candidate in the islands – he recently returned from a strong performance at the MLB Combine.
“It has been boosted by confidence, but I can’t forget that preparation always keeps me confident and as long as I’m prepared for the future or am afraid of what’s to come,” Lomavita said. “Then I’ll prepare for everything.”
No matter what happens next, Lomavita says he wants to be an example to the young baseball players in Hawaii and says that anything is possible if you work hard.
“I just got back from the Draft Combine in North Carolina. It was an amazing experience and I really encourage the Hawaiian youth to work hard, ”said Lomavita. “Many children in Hawaii have a bright future, and if they keep working on it, anything is possible.”
As for the future of Lomavita, he is now a finalist for Gatorades National Baseball Player of the Year Award and the MBL Draft is scheduled for July 11th.
