Evacuation requested for components of Island of Hawaii resulting from ongoing bushfire; 14,000 hectares burned

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Firefighters from the Hawaii Fire Department tackle a bushfire in Hamakua district that consumed approximately 14,000 acres and issued evacuation orders as of Saturday, July 31.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency officials announced at 6:50 p.m. that a mandatory evacuation had been ordered for all residents of Pu`u Kapu Hawaiian Homestead and Waikii Ranch. Civil protection officials said the fire was mauka off Highway 190 and north of Old Saddle Road.

According to the fire department, shelter is available for displaced persons in Waimea District Park in Kamuela. Old Saddle Road was closed due to the fire between Highway 190 and Daniel K. Inouye Highway around 5:10 p.m.

Hawaii police said Highway 190 was closed to all traffic from Waimea Airport to Waikoloa Road due to the bushfire around 7 p.m. Saturday and advised motorists to use Queen Kaahumanu Highway instead.

Bushfires burn five acres on the Big Island

Everyone who goes to the Waimea District Park Animal Shelter is recommended to bring personal food, water, and sleeping aids. According to civil protection officials, the shelter is a pet-friendly facility.

Local residents and motorists can experience poor air quality and visibility due to smoke in the area.

People with respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors or leave the area, according to civil defense officials.
