Summary

The moderate trade winds will continue until Wednesday, with an increase in gusty winds expected in the second half of the week. Clouds and showers are concentrated over windward and mountainous areas with occasional showers reaching leeward positions.

discussion

High pressure far northeast of the islands will maintain moderate easterly trade winds during the forecast period. Rain showers riding the trades will push into the windward slopes bringing with them periodic clouds and rains. Some of these showers will reach the leeward spots of the smaller islands. The weak trough on the upper levels will last into the week, which favors an increased inversion and a higher than normal cloud ceiling. On the leeward side of the Big Island, afternoon ocean breezes and heating will allow for clouds and sporadic showers before night and early morning hours become clear. The trade winds pick up again on Wednesday and in the second half of the week as the high rises south towards the islands. Some increasing showers are possible late next week as another upper trough approaches the state.

aviation

Temperate trades are expected today, with rising winds tonight and tomorrow. Some clouds and showers are drawing in on the trades, bringing some MVFR conditions on some windward slopes, particularly on the Big Island and Maui. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected today. Some high clouds moving southwest to northeast are mostly in the south of the Big Island, but sometimes move across the Big Island.
No AIRMETs are currently in force. However, if the wind picks up tonight and tomorrow, AIRMETs may be needed for mechanical turbulence in the lee of the mountains. Should the above-mentioned MVFR conditions spread further, AIRMETs for mountain darkening could be possible.

marine

High pressure in the northeast of the state will hold moderate to locally strong trade winds with only minor fluctuations in strength for the next 7 days. A Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect for the Alenuihaha Channel through Monday and will likely need to be rolled out to the other normally windier waters around Maui and Big Island tonight or Monday.
An incoming northwest swell is expected to build up this morning, peak this afternoon and tonight, and then gradually descend Monday through Wednesday. This will give surfing along the north and west coasts a boost before it gets almost flat from Thursday through next weekend. The south coast surf will stay near summer average for the next 7 days as a number of overlapping south swells continue to move through the islands. With steady moderate to locally strong trade winds, the east coast surf will remain close to the climatological average until next weekend.
