Summary

The high pressure in the north of the area will support airy trade winds over the weekend. Stronger winds may appear early next week. Low clouds will move over the islands from the east and sparse showers will bundle up over the windward areas.

discussion

High pressures in the north and northeast of the islands will cause trade winds to blow over local waters for the foreseeable future. The main high will hardly change until today and then dissolve over the weekend when a new high forms in the north. Central pressures from this new high are expected to peak at 1038 mb early next week, making the pressure gradient steeper enough to allow locally windy trades across exposed waters on Monday and Tuesday. Otherwise, breezy trade winds will prevail.
An area of increased humidity embedded in the trade flow will move across the islands Saturday and Saturday nights and potentially lead to an increase in wind showers. Otherwise, the weak mid-elevation ridge will give way to a weak mid-elevation low over the weekend, which may allow low clouds to gain greater vertical depth, leading to increased trade shower coverage at times.

aviation

The breezy trade winds from the east will persist throughout the weekend, with clouds and showers concentrated over windward and mauka locations. MVFR CIGS / VSBYS are possible in and around passing showers. AIRMET Tango for low turbulence remains in effect until the weekend.

marine

Strong local trade winds will persist, with journeys likely to pick up early next week. Surface high pressure will persist far north of the state through the weekend, keeping trade at a moderate to locally strong level. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) covers the normally windy waters around the Big Island and Maui through Sunday and also covers additional waters around Oahu and Maui Counties through this afternoon. As mentioned above, trades are expected to pick up early next week, which may require another expansion of the SCA.
The surf on the south coast will increase from background levels to about summer average over the weekend. The south swell will slowly build up today, peaking Saturday through Sunday and decreasing early next week. The surf on the east coast will be near or slightly above the summer average during the weekend and then build up as the trade winds are expected to pick up over and against the winds of the islands early next week. Aside from some localized trade wind energies, the surf along most of the north-facing coastlines will remain almost flat until next week.
