Summary

The moderate trade winds will continue into the next week. Clouds and showers are concentrated over windward and mountainous areas with occasional showers reaching leeward positions. A few short, heavy showers are still possible over Kauai today.

discussion

A trough on the upper level maintains some instability over the western end of the state, with individual heavy showers moving west over the coastal waters southwest of Kauai. Those showers could bring some brief downpours over Kauai today.
High pressure far to the northeast of the islands will be sustained by easterly trade winds during the forecast period. Wind speeds will decrease to moderate levels on Sunday and the next week as the high moves further east. Showers driving the trade winds will push into the windward slopes and periodically bring clouds and rain with them. Some of these showers will reach the leeward spots of the smaller islands. The weak bottom of the upper level will last into the next week, which favors an increased inversion and a slightly wetter variant of the trade wind weather. On the leeward side of the Big Island, afternoon ocean breezes and heating will allow for clouds and sporadic showers before night and early morning hours become clear. The trade winds pick up again on Wednesday and the second half of the week as the high builds south towards the islands. Some increasing showers are possible late next week as another upper trough approaches the state.

aviation

While the winds have eased a bit overnight, expect the winds to rise again to a moderate to locally breezy level today. AIRMET Tango remains in effect for low mechanical turbulence in the slipstream of the mountains on all islands. Winds are expected to ease somewhat tonight as the high pressure drifts away from the islands in the northeast. In this case, the AIRMET will likely be canceled tonight or tomorrow.
Clouds and showers are carried away by the trade winds and at times create MVFR conditions mainly over the north and east sides of the islands. There are currently no AIRMETs for mountain darkening or IFR conditions in effect, nor are they expected this morning.

marine

With surface high pressure far NE of the area and a wide surface gully in the west of the islands, moderate to locally strong trade winds have only turned slightly southeast of the east. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is open for waters around Maui County and the Big Island is open this afternoon. While little significant change is expected by the weekend, a front that passes well north of the area may result in a slight weakening of the wind on Sunday. Since the low point towards W will finally dissipate in the next week, the moderate to locally strong trade winds will hit back in the more typical direction OO.
Surfing on all shores will remain below the level of the High Surf Advisory until next week. A small NW swell is expected to arrive on Sunday before slowly waning from Monday to Wednesday. Small swells coming from the southern hemisphere will bring only a small rise in surf heights along the S-facing banks this weekend and will likely keep the surf from flattening for most of the next week. Trade winds will deliver relatively small, short-period waves to the east-facing coasts.
