Hawaii County Mayor is asking for the Ironman competitors to be postponed amid the rise in instances

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii County’s office, Mitch Roth, said he was planning to postpone this year’s Ironman World Cup in light of the worrying increase in cases on the island.

As of Wednesday, 87 new COVID cases had been reported on the Island of Hawaii.

The triathlon is currently slated for October 9th after it was canceled due to the pandemic last year.

The event is one of the largest held in Kailua-Kona each year and attracts up to 10,000 people – including friends and relatives of the participants – to the area.

The Ironman World Championship began on Oahu in 1978, followed by a move to Kailua-Kona in 1981 – where the event has been held ever since.
