Kalanianaole Freeway in an easterly course merge into Waa Road in Hawaii Kai for everlasting closure

A lane closure on the Kalanianaole Highway.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced today that it will permanently close the left Merge Lane on the Kalanianaole Highway eastbound at Waa Street, starting Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

According to DOT, the crews will install a new traffic light system that will include converting the confluence lane into a new pedestrian island refuge, realigning guard rails and adding new traffic safety devices. Due to these improvements, the Merge Lane will remain closed.

There will also be a temporary closure of the left-turn lane from Waa Street onto the Kalanianaole Highway heading east. Motorists are advised to make a detour by turning left on Analii Street onto Kalanianaole Highway.

As soon as the work is completed and the traffic lights are active, drivers can turn directly left from Waa Street onto the Kalanianaole Highway.

HDOT advises motorists to exercise caution when driving through the work area and to follow all traffic control signs.
