Three beheaded ducks were found in the middle of a street in a neighborhood on Hawaii Kai, and residents, angry at the gruesome discovery, raised about $ 1,500 in reward money to help locate those responsible.
Beth-Ann Kozlovich told Hawaii News Now that she came across the duck carcasses on Monday while walking her dogs in the neighborhood.
“I went a little closer and saw that the ducks were decapitated, evenly spaced, and I knew this was by no means a natural occurrence,” she said.
Kozlovich said the ducks are Koloa – ducks native to Hawaii that are on the federal list of endangered species. The birds visit the Hahaione Valley, with many gathering along a drainage canal.
Kozlovich posted a photo of the dead ducks on the NextDoor app. In response, residents raised around $ 1,500 in reward money to help locate those responsible.
Sgt. Chris Kim of Honolulu CrimeStoppers said it was a case of second degree animal cruelty.
“When you see the pictures, it’s definitely very disturbing, very graphic, and you know, it’s not something you want the neighborhood kids to see,” Kim added.
