HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – President Joe Biden has approved the governor’s request to expand the Hawaii National Guard’s Joint Task Force assistance in providing COVID assistance to the state.
Officials said there are currently about 550 Hawaii National Guard Soldiers and Airmen helping with various COVID response tasks.
The guard assists several government agencies with thermal examinations of airport passengers, conducting COVID tests and vaccines, tracing contacts, contacting communities at risk, and distributing PPE.
This expansion of aid comes as Hawaii continues to grapple with the surge in positive COVID cases and hospital admissions, as well as the worrying spread of the Delta variant.
Officials said federal orders for the Hawaii National Guard would end in September, but as part of that extension, members will support all counties in the state through December.
